All petrol stations are equipped with a well catered shop that is visited by a large audience, consisting of more than just people stopping for gas. A recent development is the shift in functionality from a local petrol station to a neighborhood shop focused on the future. The number of visitors are increasing due to the extended utilities such as a carwash or mini supermarket but also non food functions; electronic retail, post office or pick-up point.
Even for highway petrol stations the Shopping Mission is changing. The National Petrol Survey show that a similar trend is occurring here: only 62% of the visitors have as their primary reason stopping for gas. 21% stops to pick up something to eat or drink in the shop.
Roadside restaurants are often combined with success formulas like McDonald's, Starbucks, Burger King or Domino's Pizza. These high traffic locations are very popular especially among business people. The majority of visitors to a roadside restaurant come for a business meeting or conference. Van der Valk Hotels and Restaurants are the largest caterer of meetings, seminars and conferences for the business sector in the Netherlands.
